Speaker:

I came a long way. I can taste the world in the It just can't be both ways. Gotta make up your mind for you. Lose time with your priorities. Priorities. Gotta make up your mind for you. Lose time with your priorities. Priorities gotta make up your Lose time. Hey, welcome to the source cast. My name is Elijah Greiner, one So thankful that you are here. You just heard music from just Alexander called priorities. Um, this song is out. You can stream it anywhere you just released a new album called You should go and stream it. You should go and download it. You should go and pay for it. Um, help the artist out. Um, he just released it. So we're very excited about this about later on in this episode. Um, so I don't want to hold you Let's jump right in. All right. Well, we got some friends with We got Sean Diaz, known as Crew We got Stevie Monteiro. Monteiro. Is that how you say it? Known as just Stevie. There it is. And then we got Pastor Marco, Modern day disciple. He got it with us. You know, we got to bring that I'll be forgetting. I'm just Pastor Michael. What was it? What was your rap name? Oh, man. No name rookie. No name. Rookie. Wow. Yeah. This is news. Yeah. It was. So this is when cross movement Yeah, yeah. Group of Christianity, And there was a line there in that Christ takes, you know, them into perennial masters. I was like, I want to be a no Wow. You know what I mean? That's dope. So that's where that came from. That's dope man. Yeah. Sheesh. I wish I would have knew that Yeah. I had the hardest time figuring Yeah. Yeah. That's hilarious. So what made you get to Judge So, man, that was a lot of turmoil and, and, and, um, but yeah, because I was always in a group like, you know what I mean? Since two thousand and eight, when it all started, I was in chosen generation then beyond music. So as far as I was concerned, I, there was no need to have like a name. I just went by the group, you But then when I stepped into, my own, I was just like, if just going to get Stevie Wonder. Like they're never gonna find my So I remember like, just really figure out like, all right, but just didn't feel authentic. It all just felt super corny. And I remember talking to this guy just like just venting, just like, man, I literally like, I'm just Stevie. Like, I don't know. And then he was just like, there Like, yo, let's go, go, go with And then that changed So I was just like, I'm just Hey, that's awesome. And it fits. Yeah, yeah. What about you? How'd you get to crew Alexander Um, so I've been making music And, um, I remember when I high school, I was like, I feel And so I remember I literally I was on the toilet and I'm and I came across the word I was like, what does that mean? I looked it up and it's like And this is super cheesy. I was like, yeah, I'm vital to Yeah. I'm important. You know, so I gotta, I gotta So I ended up no name rookie Yeah. It didn't even, it was like, no, And so I sat with that. I was like, yeah, I think that's So I ended up going with crucial And, um, I think I also always Um, and people would always call Yeah. And so I was like, you know with crew and then Alexander is And then I just spelled it differently because I wanted to be cool. Yeah, yeah. You know, and hip and now and now I'm, I'm, I'm seeing the effects of that because Alexa never plays my music because it doesn't know how to spell my name. So the kids are always like, She's like, I can't find that Oh man. I'm like, I'm about to get a Yeah, right. I need, I need a rebrand again. So all you guys used to you used You still kind of rap every then you guys rap. What made you all choose rap Well, I'm the oldest, so I'll All right. Um, funny thing is, I got saved. I was twenty years old and came off the streets basically, you know, and wanted to see other young men like myself find Christ. Right. And it happened by accident, really, because we were part of the church. And, you know, we're coming off want to know this Jesus and get So we would do everything the Including being in a choir where we had no business being in a choir. Bring that back. Right. Like we're all in choir just because we want to be in the church. Yeah. So one day we're choir practice, we're just like hanging out waiting. Because, you know, in choir there's different, you know, tones, right? So they'll practice like the Yeah, yeah. So we were just on the side just just messing around. Right. And we just started freestyling, Just messing around because we Yeah. The pastor's wife, which was the choir director, was hearing us freestyling. Right. She come up to us, she goes, like to do something like this We're like, wait, what? Like we just messing around? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The church used to do this thing would have like different people their talent through music. Right? And they would invite different So she's like, why don't you guys do a song for fall festival? Right? And we're like, you can't be Like we're just messing around. Like we've never done this. I'm not even a rapper. Yeah. You know, so from there, me and if we did something like that? Like, why not? Right? We want our friends to know And they love hip hop. So we started to mess around, started writing, trying to figure out like, how do we put Christ on, you know, on every lyric? And believe me, we were But it was like a great avenue opening many doors for us to, to So that's how the whole thing You know, it was just a joke. Wow. That's crazy. That's amazing. That's so cool that she vision cast that I know, I know, it's pretty awesome that she had that. Yeah, she saw it, you know, so and you toured too for a little bit. Yeah. It was for a little bit. Not not a big time. No MDD was big time MDD. Let's go. How'd you guys get started? So for me, I was twenty one years old and I was a youth leader. And again, it was just kind of be used in whatever way. So I was on the worship team, I'm not like this guy. You know, Sean's a singer, you Okay. Auto tune all day and it's not So I was in the worship team, Wednesday, we were just doing, songs, You know what I mean? And but we had a lot of like kids from like inner city kids, you know, in the youth group and stuff. And, and it was just like, you know, I'm trading my sorrows that can only take you, you know, take us back, take us back. So it's like we would do those And those songs were, yeah, But it's just like we were like, You know what I mean? To appeal to, to this group that Um, so we decided to cover a They were big back in the day, so we decided to cover their songs. Um, and then we started to get response, like a reaction. So then I had the bright idea to can kind of like make our own So at that time, and not that I whatever, but I had wrote like a So then we kind of like put that One of the kids in the youth piano, and then it started with of took off. And it's like I was grew up in a Nazarene church, so there was no. Like we sang hymns every Sunday. There was no like rap or But like, for whatever reason, grabbed like took Ahold of it So then it was just like every, it seemed like every other Sunday we were performing this song. And then it just kind of just know what I mean? Yeah. Um, so yeah, that's kind of how Yeah. For me, for me, it was I, um, I think I was probably My, um, my, my uncle actually produced a lot of Cape Verdean music. Um, so he was like, he had a studio in my grandmother's house and everything. Like he was heavily into music and my dad one day just decided, like my cousin was over and he decided to write us a little rap. And he was like, I want you guys And I was like, what is this? Like, what is rap? You know, like, I don't even So I started reciting it. And from there, I think like God something inside of me that I And so like, I think started writing until I was when it started to like grow I was like, yo, I actually little bit more often. So I started recording a little Um, and then that just like catapulted into a whole new level of like, yo, I'm actually doing this, I'm living this thing out. I love doing this. And I love the attention I was So that became like the driving And then when, when, you know, the Lord took my life and I got saved, that's when I made that transition. I said, I can't be doing secular Um, and that was hard because I was like, I just learned about the Lord. Like, what am I supposed to rap Like, what am I talking about? So I'd go back and I'd listen to And I was like, this feels a I'm like, I don't know how to So it was, it was a very hard But over time, as the Lord me, that's when it became like a Because now I wasn't doing it I wasn't doing it just to be, It was like, nah, I'm doing this forth, you know? So it really changed everything Yeah, yeah. Let's go. And what makes y'all keep Because some people do flame out I got something. But then kind of flames out. What made you what made you I think it's passion. I think it's passion. And knowing that it's, it's a in, in a way that sometimes You know, like I can sit here somebody about what I'm dealing sit down and like, go deep into and then express that musically, Yeah. You know, and I, and I feel like people have related to that a lot more. And just seeing the messages from people that are much this song changed my life. Wow. This listening to this song darkness to light, you know? And that alone is just more than It's like, God, I feel like I'm Yeah. You know? So I have to continue doing Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And kind of like the same for me, like, believe it or not, like stuff like this, like just having conversations like scares me. Like, you know what I mean? It makes me really nervous. I feel like I thank God for communicate best through song. That's how I feel like I and in I feel like my confidence has able to, to kind of feel But it started with finding my what I mean? That's kind of. And when I and when I'm rapping and I'm in my car and I'm a feeling that it's hard to like a closeness to God, you Like, like just operating in, in When I'm writing and just by So, you know, as I'm kind of out, you know what I mean? Like it brings me closer to him. It helps me to rely on him. And then being able to use that to kind of like what you said, to be able to bless others and point others, other people to him. That's kind of like what drives Yeah, these guys are true You know, I love that to hear that because you can tell those are artists. You know what I mean? For us, we knew we weren't You know what I mean? We knew like we knew this is It's going to be for a season. And it was fun. We enjoyed it. And the same God used it in so people to the saving knowledge And for us, it was like, all We knew like, okay, time's up. Right? There's other ways for us to do And obviously doing what I'm every week, right through Um, but I love hearing that someone's a true artist, right? It's how they manifest comfortable in that lane. Yeah. And they can't wait to go back in the kitchen and cook something like. So I love hearing that because true artists right there. Right. Absolutely. That's awesome. Absolutely. And they're living a dream that Yes. I'm saying. Yeah. No, no. I was gonna say like to, disciples, like you guys were were starting because like you You know what I mean? We looked up to you guys. We were inspired by you guys. But it wasn't just the the bringing to the table musically. It was just like being around you guys and going to the conferences and hearing your stories. Like we knew you guys were They were living it out versus You know what I mean? That you're listening to from You don't know them. You don't see them. You don't see how they interact with each other, how they treat people. Like what, how they're involved You don't know. Modern Day Disciples was that And that was like just as more I put that to a higher regard to like the music and like the skills. You said, like you didn't want were great at being just Yeah, yeah. Men of God. And that meant so much more. So let's talk about that because We, we are living in a day and age now where anybody can make music, right? Anybody can do what they want to do, especially with all the tools. Um, but I think that's, that's a very important thing to talk about. How have you guys navigated through that tension of just making music, but also really representing Christ? You know what I mean? Because we're seeing that You know what I mean? Right. I know for me, it was like we settled on beyond Music, it was than music because it's like, church, just like, you know, like, you know how to speak the Like for me, it was different. Like, I can write a, I don't say this to like to make myself sound like the best artist, but I know how to write a Christian song. Like that's easy, but it's just Can I actually live this out? You know what I mean? And then being somebody who's always like, you know, whether it's like being the youth leader or music like that, I feel like music helped me to like, held me accountable. You know what I mean? To like, make sure that I'm So I feel like having like doing never want to be a fraud. I never want to be fake. You know what I mean? I want hopefully, like, what I'm, I'm not portraying like that. I'm perfect, have it all But hopefully, like I'm living hopefully my lifestyle matches, Because like, I've seen the saying one thing but then living effects of that. And that just like messes with Just like the thought that like, moment where somebody's just just rapping about this, but now So like the music has held me and, and I'm accountable to God, So it's just, um, just keeping Yeah, yeah. And I can agree with that too. I feel like also the accountability part, but also like the fact that I get to spend time with the Lord as I'm doing it, you know, that that's the fun part for it for me, you know, and it wasn't always that way. Like I would jump in the studio to create, but I didn't know Right? But it wasn't until I was like, now, Holy Spirit. Like depositing me whatever it your people, whatever that is, it's somebody else's story you message is, I want it to be translates well, you know, and mindset, like, this isn't just Like, this is me on mission, you And that's why I appreciate music, it's like, yeah, that's, Like this does go beyond music. You know, initially it may have Initially it may have been, you know, I just like to have fun, which there are still parts of it. Don't get me wrong, I love being I love making music. Um, but the most gratifying part of it is just being able to sit with the Lord and be like, God, look at what we created together. You know, like, I'll turn it up And I'm like, yo, look at what Like, this is crazy. You know, it feels, it feels so And I know that God's going to So I'm excited to see what comes You know, you're also an artist, As a, as a worship leader, you of like craziness come out of By the way, the name No Name was in cross movement. He's no longer a Christian favorite dudes in the group. Right. And a few years back, he made a whole video, you know, breaking down, deconstructing out of the faith. And it's just like, wow, man, Like shaped me so deeply that I made it part of me. And now he's no longer a And we're seeing this even in the, in the in this because I think we got to talk about music in general. It's just not just rap music, How are you as a worship leader Yeah, for me, it's, it's quite easy and quite simple because I'm plugged into the local church. And for me, it's I'm always trying to point people back to the gospel. Every song I write, I'm like, good of a singer or writer I am. It's like I'm trying to do one gospel, point you back to Jesus. And if that's the main thing, I The main thing always. And being tied to a local church me grounded and keeps me this on my own volition. I'm doing this because God's He'll carry me through it. And my job is only simply to And I think a lot of people, some fame, it becomes about them god of the of the scene. And they start stop pointing And a lot of people, even on Caleb, like you can hear him like, this song isn't about Jesus. It's just about good feelings. Like it's a good feeling song. I'm like, that's trash. Like, I want to point people only one that can save even three minute song. So that's how I've stayed grounded and lived in that tension. Like, I'm here to live for I'm here to be a no name person who can point people back to Jesus. And that's how I approach Yeah. So good. What about the kids, man? Because I know everybody wants Everybody wants to rap. Yeah. Like, what would you say from are like, I just want to rap. I just want to get some clout. I just want to, you know what I Be noticed. And what would you say to those And it's tough because I feel know, doing this for as long as a constant tension because a rapper, it's like it can centered about yourself, right? And being a Christian rapper, Like you can, you know, even though it's just like, I, you know, the intentions, I feel like always start off pure, like, you know, the goal is to point people to Jesus, to glorify him. But as you're doing it on your like your motives can change. You know what I mean? Like where like for one, like people to him. Now it's just like you like the attention you like the likes the comments. And now that can become like So it's just like, man, I, of the young dudes that, you into Christian rap, you know It's just like the, the talent, worked out, but the heart. Like making sure that your heart thing, even for me. Like I have moments where it's have to catch myself. But it comes, it starts with like going back to that why and like you. And it's not just like a one Like I have to like, always this is to point people to Jesus Like that's it. And like, usually everybody's But like, I know for me, like like, be off a little bit, it's the signs of that are like, now I'm checking like, you know, constantly, like how many Then it's just like, okay, like like, all right. So like, is this about pointing people to Jesus and glorifying God? Or is this about like building And it's like that constant because it's like, you know, God's calling me to this and I'm steward, you know, this gift trying to like, do it well. And I believe that, you know, you know, as an artist, like you want, you believe God's given you something, you want that to get out to as many people as possible. So then it's just like, all right, we're on social media, we're making content, we're doing this. So it's like, in a way, it's like you have to kind of build your platform, but then things can get muddy because it's just like, no, like we want to build his platform. But at the same time, like you have to build yours too, you know? So it's like a weird like to stay grounded and just like and know yourself, like, know, just keep yourself in check praying like, you know, search intentions, pure motives. Even like with the album that know that I'm going to be like be doing the content, but it's the main thing, the main thing because like I said, like I can like the words, but like, what's You know what I mean? Like, so I never want to be for my own, you know? Yeah. Yeah, I can, I can definitely talked about that. We've had that conversation we refrain from crossing that us than it is about the Lord? You know, and I think it does revolve back around the question of why, what's my why behind this? When I get in the studio, when releasing this, what is my why Because I want to reach more Or am I doing this because I generate some more income for Because there's that battle to Because I know when I jumped into music in the secular world, it was like I wanted the rapper lifestyle. This is the age of MTV cribs, you know, like you watching this. And then to find out all of that even their homes, you know, Everything's rented. Yeah, it was all rented, bro. It was all it was all, you know, So just to see that that's where I have to constantly be asking myself, where is your heart right now? You know, like, like you said, constantly like going back to what about the numbers of people Like, even if this song only got thirty streams this week, that's thirty people that potentially could have planted a seed in them that could lead them to the Lord. You know, and so even for the you are looking to pursue this, What is the why behind this? How are you? What is your plan to set those don't fall into the trap because Like you said, you know, it can to build our platforms. We're the face of this product, saying it's not about me though. You know, it's like, look at me, Look at him, you know? And that's, that's where you have to figure out how to, how to break that tension and stay in that vein of like, this is for the Lord, and only for him to bring glory and being around people that that will humble you. Like I know, like the circle and And like you said, like we're serving the church, like we serve with the middle school students. Like, so it's like, you know, like being a part of the church having people that will, you know, I mean, that will humble That helps. You know what I mean? Like to, to make sure not Yeah, yeah. What about from, uh, from a know you do worship development, on that onboarding process. And there's always that tension People want to be on stage, How do you, how do you wrestle Yeah, that one's, that one's a Um, especially for the young you're on a stage, people give you or not. And so that's a scary place to you're going to be held you say in my name, whether you And so for the young ones, we always First we'll do like a, a litmus test. Like, are you actually gifted? Can you actually see and can you And then after that, we'll be and build you in the quiet and best place you can actually carry the gifting. Because we say it all the time. Gifting can get you in the room, You know what I'm saying? And so for the young ones, it's always telling them like, your gifting is one thing, but character is a whole nother thing. Yeah. A gifted person usually lacks character, but a person with character can build a gifting any type of the day, any day of the week. And so we always try to get to this one girl I can think of to like bring her back, be like, No, you need your character gifting can fly, right? And so we keep pulling them And there has to be that, like someone has to like have the permission for someone to have That's good. Yeah. I was thinking about this going to do this episode, I men that we got to mentor a modern day disciples, because we about us, right? We want to help others. And they were young and They were actually the true But the tension was that it was the character wasn't there, right? They weren't ready yet. Right. But they had the gift, right? They could write bars, man. And one of my good friends, Isaiah, which we had the he was one of the founders of modern day disciples. He kept telling me he's like, man, I don't think they're ready. I don't think they're ready. Right. But you live in that tension of give them to be ready? Right? Because they're itching, And he was right, man. We, we, we gave him a little through their heads. Yeah. You know, and so I'm looking something years ago and feeling You know what I mean? Because we, we jumped ahead. And that's why now I'm so like stage because it's like, man, important than your gifting. And that's an ongoing tension Now, in the church world, you You know what I mean about including pastors, right? I'm talking to myself as well. And so that's something that I feel like we have to constantly be, you know, living in that tension. And I get ahead of ourselves. And I love what you said about the church, because come to find are not going to church, right? You know, they're just touring and it's like, man, sooner or later that's going to catch up to you. Yeah. Or the pastors are traveling it's like, where's your family? Like, who are you connected to? So I say this because I know that will listen to this stuff. And it's like, man, we care too Just to care about your gifting. Yeah, you know what I mean? And I pray that we continue to do that, at least for us as a church. It's like, man, let's not lose Yeah. That we might have gifted people in the room, but are they character ready? Right. For what God's trying to do with You know, facts. Facts. Because that was Satan's fault He was the lead worship leader, Yeah. And it was that notoriety, like having that space in that platform, that that little thing comparing himself to God got him out. So when you jump on a stage, you're putting yourself in a making it about yourself. Right. And that's the thing that's Yeah. There's a quote that I heard years ago that that stuck with me and I think about it all the time. Um, he said, as soon as pride off the stage. And that's something that like especially I know how I, how I Like whenever I have to perform or even do stuff like this, whatever, like I'm like shook to my core. Like I feel like the weight of And so I was like, I never want Like, like the thought of him that shakes me to my core. You know what I mean? So it's just like, I never want You know what I mean? So yeah, I want to take a quick you this one thing. Would you subscribe to this channel if you have not subscribed yet? And if you haven't set up the notifications, would you do that? If you haven't liked this video, you share it as well? We love you and we're thankful Let's jump back in. Yeah. That's good. We're recording this on, you know, what we call Monday, Thursday, right of the Holy Week. And, and today is the day that garden praying like and And what is he praying, father, not my will, but your will be done. And then what does he tell his He says, I read it this morning. He says, man, watch and pray, because your spirit is willing, Right? And that's that tension. I think anyone who's trying to just music wise, it could be a You could be a stay at home mom Right? You know what I mean? Your spirit may be willing, but right in check. Right. Um, so from a practical standpoint, right, when it comes to music, though, it's, it's very like whether we like it or not, it's ego driven in a lot of ways. Right? Especially rap music, right? It's like about flexing Right? Like even if even if you don't Like it's like, that's part of So, so from a, uh, artist again, saying the right things, are some of your mechanics, I living in that tension of man, Right? But but my check, my flash needs to be checked right about now, right? Like, I don't know if I'm making No. Yeah. Right. Like, how do you wrestle with Even from a worship leader? I'd like to hear that. I ain't writing bars. It's definitely it's definitely it does feel like that pride But I'm also I'm also confident in the gifting that the Lord gave. That's good. You know what I'm saying? So at the same time, it's like, Yeah, yeah. You know what I'm saying? But I don't want to cross that line of like, I'm the best rapper alive. You know what I mean? Because we all have our Um, I think we just, again, just what is my why behind this? Are you making this about you? Or is this line supposed to that changes them forever? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, don't make it about, oh, yeah, crew has the best, best bars ever. I love that entire album. Every, every bar, uh, hit me But it's like, what was it? What was happening in your heart You know, so it is a tough one, Like, and you see it a lot. I think. I think rap is one of the more it is the most competitive, uh, sport, right? In genre of music like no other. You don't see country artists It just doesn't happen. That would be hilarious. That would be hilarious. But yeah, it just it just You know, at the same time, it Like, yeah, I, I grew up that like, you know, my bars are each other back and forth. So it's like, there's some fun check yourself constantly. Like, am I making this about me Yeah. You know, because it's not about But it's very, it's very Yeah. But it's definitely fun. Like when you come up with that you, and you can kind of respond to that. And then it's like those moments go over, like everybody said, But then there's that one person said this, it does feel good. And I've learned over the years, Like, cause people are gonna, like, give you a compliment or whatever. And it's just like you have like, you know what I mean? Just whatever. They'll kind of stiff arm it's just like, I try not to be It's just like, thanks, you I mean, I'm glad you liked that like trying not to let that gas Like, you know, and get to my And now, like, now I'm searching like what I talked about know, it is an interesting when you're rapping like you to like have those create those But again, it's just like when you're when, when we're writing, when we're working on music, you know, we're, we're doing it with God. That's, that's our mindset. We know we're partnering with So it's almost just like, yeah, just came up with God through, Good, good stuff. God, you know what I mean? Yeah. One of my favorite lines of name in one of the songs. Can you can you talk about that I really love that line. Yeah, yeah. No. And I said, I got myself a I'm a bad dude. So it's just like the Erykah Badu, but then I call myself a bad dude. So, so that's a, that's a, That's clever. But, but it's funny because that was one of those things that some people got, but like, not everybody knows who Erica Badu is. Yeah, yeah. Erica who so you're a bad dude. Yeah, exactly. So it's like probably ninety percent of the people just are you just called yourself a bad dude? Yeah, yeah. What's the big deal? But I was like, yo, if you know, Erykah Badu is like, right, right. You appreciate that? Isn't that funny? That's funny. Oh man. That's awesome. Yeah. Well, listen, it's I don't think worship standpoint, right? People are worshiping God to Yeah. Right, right, right. Just, I just got a text yesterday from a pastor out in Boston and he's like, man, I'm gonna keep listening to this song over and over again that you wrote, you know, um, as it is. Yeah. Right. Um, how do you live in that Because you're literally like, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, honestly, for me, heart has been the thing that's and I'm stealing everything from Psalm twenty three. It was literally Psalm twenty I wanted to write David, the psalmist, and I was like, I can't do that because somebody called David. The Psalm is gonna get the Right, right. Like they'll get sense. Um, so I come from that realization, like my cleverness or my gifting is I'm just taking from the Bible and adding it to a song. And if I'm able to add the Bible to hit somebody, right? Um, and then there's some songs It's, uh, what's it called? There's one called good, but there's another one called I can't think of it, but I'm writing it and man, it's managed just ministering to me, and I know that's when I. There's something special when it's ministering to me, like when it's actually, um, hitting my heart. That's when I know, okay, It was Holy Spirit working through me that actually gave me the song. Yeah. It's kind of, I think of, uh, of He was confident in his gifting trusted in God. Um, and I know that sounds how I approach songwriting. I'm like, God, I'm gifted to a I need you to come and actually Like that song. I felt like it just came from this piano that's back here, and I was like, yo, this is awesome. Yeah. And it just kept flowing. I don't know if that answers the what happens for me. No. That's good. Um, speaking of David, right. Um, let's talk about like the process because I'm watching, I don't know if you guys have seen the, the House of David show, right? Oh, it's so good. Like I just watched the second season and I love how again, sometimes I think people read the Bible like in a galaxy far, far away. Leave these people. But what I love about these shows is like, they really bring you to the, to the heart of it like this. These are real people living in And so there's a really cool, uh, couple of episodes where they show David his process of writing because, you know, David wrote like eighty percent of the songs, right? Which end up being music. People don't realize a lot of times like you're reading lyrics. Yeah. You know, and, and then just With his little ARP, you know, I the Lord is my shepherd, right? And he like showed it to someone and he's like, what do you think? So I was like, man, it's so cool to see that because a lot of times we just see it as in the scriptures, right? But it's like, no, someone sat And try to process because he And he's trying to like Um, so fast forward to twenty You guys do this all the time. I've told you this, uh, you're Like I love, like how you And I love how you deliver and flow, which is so cool. So how do you do that? Like, how do you go through your I think for me right now, It changes in multiple different seasons. But right now, as of late, it that I really like. Right. And I know like, oh, there's Like I can just feel it. Like, you know, when you turn on a beat and you're like, ah, you know, like right away within the first five seconds, you just move on. But sometimes I'll wait, right? And knowing myself, I'm like, I of me immediately. So I won't even, like, listen to I'll wait until I get into the to record, and I'll sit down, let it go. Whether it's melodies that come out, gibberish, whatever those things are. And most of the time, the majority of the time there's something there that God releases that I'm like, that's what this song is about, you know? So it'll just come. And I love doing that because It doesn't feel like me getting hours like, oh, what am I going Like, I don't know what to say. It's like it just pours out. And then I start building off of And so it's a really fun I actually encourage you to do just allows the Lord to, to lead trying to like say, oh, I went write about it. You know, it's like, yeah, there's probably something there. But when you when you let the say, God, speak through me people to hear right now, it's a So it's fun, man. Like even I'm telling you, if the songs that you know of mine, you'd be like, I can't believe Like, I wasn't saying nothing, hook that I said that was like, And I'm like, oh, Lord, you are And then it starts to build from So it's such a beautiful I love it. So you hit the studio without Most of the time. That's crazy. Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't always like, man, it's like, I don't, I don't start the recording process until like, I know, like all the writing is complete, you know, I'm in there. So you start with the lyrics Is that how. No, no. I'll start with a beat. Um, so all my writing, like I Like I can't just like, sit and song and write like it's always For some reason, that's just where everything just comes to me. Like, you know, whether it's bringing my kids to school or on some time to just go for like a It's always when I'm driving. So it's like nothing's written I just use like, you know, the voice, the voice memos app or whatever. So I'll just, you know, as I'm whatever, I'm just putting And until I eventually do it And then when I get into the studio, I already have like everything memorized. So I'm not reading lyrics off of I'm just, I just, I just go for Yeah. But I like, I like what you That's that's yeah, that's try Yeah, yeah. It's fun. I feel like I'll have a complete It'll just be like all just like Like I can't take nothing from You don't talk to me like you Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like, yo, so I don't know. I don't know. I'll try it, but I'm not sure. Let's take a song like As It is. Right. How was that process like? Like, just take one song. That's one song. So that song came out of, I So a lot of I piggyback off of That's the one I feel like Holy Spirit there's like that direct line. So for that song as it is, and church like open Heaven, God, we And I wanted to put language to And so that song as it is, that's kind of where it came out the longest. The thing that took the longest Uh, how does it go? Your spirit break free. Something is changing in the So I was like, I had four I sent it to pastor Josh from collaborate and everything. They were sending me back. I'm like, that's not it. That's not it. That's not it. And then one day, again, I was sitting there thinking about the church. I'm like, every time we get together, something shifts in the room when there's worship and when there's preaching God's Word and the altar, something shifting. And so that song kind of just puzzles coming together. And again, it's the Lord's Yeah. As it is in heaven, let it be on That's what we we literally say The Lord's Prayer. Yeah. And so I wanted that to kind of be in the, in the vein And that's how that song was Yeah. Mhm. As, um, as a preacher, I tell you, my, my process is this and I, and I encourage you guys to do this because I believe it's, it's, it's the Lord's process, right? And I tell this to the guys who It's like, look, your content saturated in prayer. Absolutely. Like prayer to me is part of the Like throughout this week, it's like my pockets of prayer is way more important than studying, right? Like they go together. But if I had to pick one, I would pick prayer over study because I could have a message that's like, okay, I have my points, right? But is, Are these points actually, to me, make the message and a speech, right an anointed song is prayer. Honestly, it's like I is my because I want the heart of God. And I think that's what Because God said it, right? Hey, he's he's got my heart. Yeah. Right. And I think that's why his Psalms was so powerful because David wanted to commune with God. Right. And David wanted God's people to So that's how I try to work through the content of preaching is God. Are you in this message? And is this going to bless your Right? Is this going to strengthen your people and even correcting people or rebuke your people because you love your people, right? So to me, prayer needs to be a because it's almost like you can listening to some songs, which I Just because someone says Christ doesn't mean it's a good song, Right? Right. Or just because someone preached Christ doesn't mean it's a good message, right? Absolutely right. And I think the difference is I really, really, really believe Like the difference is, are you Right? Are you truly, genuinely seeking God or are you just creating content for the sake of creating content? Does that make sense? Yeah. So even to go off of that. So for the album as it is in heaven, when we record it live, we were in two weeks of prayer and fasting, and we were because we were celebrating our ten year anniversary and we were recording. Was it Saturday? I think we recorded that whole The worship team was praying and for the album. And I think that's what previous album, Mighty Wind. It's like God was like, okay, This is my will. These songs are my will. I'm going to take these further than you can think, dream, or imagine. And man, I've been blown away by the people listening to them and how they're being blessed by them. Yeah. Like that. It's something to that when you yourself, God is like, okay, For you. I gave this to you. Yeah. To bless the community. But now I'm going to take it Absolutely. Right. So let's talk about that because celebrate looking at you guys is right from when I got saved. Right. You know, I remember walking into a Christian bookstore for the first time in my life, right? Me and my boy Isaiah, we got We're like, we need music, Right? And we go into this, uh, place tiny section of like five CDs. Yeah. I'm giving my age now CDs. Yeah. Did you go to Morningstar? Vinyl? Yes. Morningstar. Right. And we found for the first time It was House of Representatives. It was like that was the first And we were blown away. We're like, we didn't even know Yeah. Right. Yeah. And it's funny because, man, fast forward, the music has come so far. I mean, the talent is on another I'm wearing CB's hoodie and KB to me is is like, man, he's taking this art form to a whole nother level. Anointed. Mhm. Gifted. Yeah. But like bars, right? Not not just cheesy. You know what I mean? Mhm. Um, so let's talk about that. Like, what makes the difference between a good song and just like, come on, man, you just say, Jesus. Yeah. Can we be honest? Even like on K-Love? Like I got convicted because, would take the kids to, to This was a few years back. God really convicted me because I was like, I don't listen to Caleb. You know, I mean, my wife she's like, a lot of people get I was like, I know, but I'm not. I'm not one of them. So that day I donated to K-Love just because I donated a Cankle Fritz. I felt, I felt I felt so convicted that it's not my style. You know what I mean? Right. But like, again, we all have our what makes a good song? like you're like, man, that's Yeah, I think, I think it's, um, Right. But I don't want to base it off Because feelings are fleeting, But there's something, there's a hear a song and you know what that you're like, oh, this, this Like, you know, like there's a to listening to something that's I'll put this on in the gym and Yeah, right. But when you, when you hear that I felt that line. I felt what he's saying in the Like, yeah, the bridge brought Like there's a, there's a feel the Spirit of God moving on But it's hard, like sometimes, space, especially with these just trying to make cool music. It's true. Which it sounds cool. Like I'm, I'm not mad at it. What are you saying? But it's like, yeah, what are we You know, like it? It sounds cool. I'm grateful that you have a great flow and all these different things. But like, what was the heart Yeah. Like, did you just do this Because it was like, this is trendy and I want to jump on this wave. And so I'm going to do this Or was it like, no, I'm really living this thing out, you know, behind the scenes, you know, my, my son just just shared a song with me was like, what do you think? I was like, that's not for me. That's not it. That's a no for me. Dog. What song was it? I don't even remember the name, It wasn't it, you know, I was like, that's that's a no for me, dog. Yeah. That's hilarious. That's what separates a lot of Like you talked about. KB like I really like Jovi production, his music is on but it's hard. Like, and that's what I look to listening, when I'm trying to Christian rappers or whatever. Like I don't want to like wonder this dude is about, like some of they're just trying to sound attention or whatever, but like and I feel like artists like try to in my music, hopefully if Hopefully it doesn't take you about, you know what I'm saying? It's just like when you listen know he's about Jesus, you know It's undeniable. Um, so if you can have that, but also at the same time, do it in a way that's fun and that that's relevant. But like music is powerful. Like music, like can spark You know what I mean? Like music can galvanize, you You can go to the, if you're, if you go to the gym, you know what I mean? Like listening to certain songs can really can help you get through a workout, you know what I mean? So it's like, um, so get you Yeah. Right. Situation circumstances that about you guys. There's certain worship songs that's like a song for the season. Yeah, that I mean, in my So to me, it's like, man, it's a That God gives you. Yeah, right. There's certain songs in certain moments, you're like, man, I needed that. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. It's comforting. So for me, I, I'm production, my mind goes straight to production. So it's the sound like right most is Willem Augusto, and it's just moving up and down. And there's something so like soothing about it and comforting that sometimes when I play music and there's words, I'm like, you're just getting in the way for you. Like, and that's probably always listening to music or lyrics that I'm like, I just just need to listen to music. And he's such a when we say Yeah. And then his gifting is pointing And so Jesus just like Yeah. That's what anointing means when Yeah, yeah. Because I think one of the tensions that I see in the church capital C church is that, you know, anointing does not mean work. You don't work. Right? Even the word anointing to get that takes place. And I think what I see again, I could be wrong is that some people are not spending enough time letting it like develop and grow. I think they're in a rush, It's like, um, you know, my my son and his friends try to mess around. I'm like, look, come back to me when you're like, really worked on this thing, you know what I mean? Because he's like, yo, listen, I just made this five minutes I'm like, I don't want to. Yeah, I'm doing that. I'm always pushing it back. I'm like, no, like, you know Like, don't, don't give me like threw together real quick. You know, it's like the pastor goes, let's see what we got. Yeah. Right, right. You know what I mean? Yeah. It's like, let's see what the But it's like the Lord's. Like you didn't spend time with Like that's true. You didn't let this thing Wow. You know what I mean? So I think the rush process is, The second one is people process, you're not praying. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you're not really You're just trying to get Yeah. Right. You know, and then the that's another one like that. Listen, just because you say But did. Mhm. Right. Did you put some work into this? You know what I mean? Did you really let it. Like, did someone listen to this Right. Yeah. Right. Yeah, you know what I mean? You guys, what I'm talking Absolutely. Absolutely. There's a thing called prosody where a lot of people don't know this. It's where the melody and the So, like, if the melody of the song is going up and then you say the word up, it's like it amplifies what you're trying to say. And a gifted artist would know So if they're saying like, I'm down, like, no, it doesn't matter. It doesn't match. What are you saying? You're not down. It's called frosty. Frosty. Yeah. And so gifted. And even in Psalms, it says a skilled musician will play before kings. And there is an a, a pool. Like if you want to actually go somewhere, you got to be skilled. Yeah, you got to be good. You got to do the the quiet The hidden work. Yeah. To put you in a place where That's why David was so David would be called to play Yeah. Because King Saul had a troubled And we know music, man. Like it soothes the soul. Powerful. And so a much deeper level. Like that's why it's scary, Where a lot of these secular know, weird things and not affecting other people. Absolutely. They're spirits. Right. And it's crazy to think that are so into depression and all And it's like, man, music is so Absolutely. It's so powerful. Like you could, you can help deepen their right, their That's how powerful that is. You know what I mean? It's a universal language. Yeah. That's why. That's why we have to be careful we're saying it. Like there's even times where I wanted to say a certain thing But I have to be very careful about how I say it, that it doesn't attach to someone's spirit. Right. You know, in a negative way, about what I've gone through, about how I'm portraying this or Well, to know I came from the not still there. Yeah. So it's very important, man. I think I think it's a it's a have to consider when you're, Um, but the process, it doesn't eliminate the fun from the process. You know, it still makes it fun. It still it still gives you a space to be able to collab with the Lord, you know, and just and just do what he's calling you to do. Yeah, no. That's good. I remember having a conversation with my son about an artist was big, right? And I was like, okay, I'm gonna But I listened to every song. I was waiting for the Mhm. Right. And it was never a transition. It was always about the struggle, the struggle. And he's big. Like he's and I'm like, man. The journey, though, has to have breakthroughs in healing and transition. And but you're just talking about the struggle, the struggle, the struggle, the struggle. And so these kids are all listening to the struggle and the struggle. It's like, okay, now you're Yeah. Because that's all it is. And I'm like, man, that's sad have Egypt, we have wilderness. I mean, but then we have healing like we're supposed to Imagine all we did was tell the Jesus died on the cross, down the cross, but he never resurrected. Right? You know, the redemption, where's the redemption part of all this? And I was again, I'm like, Do I It's hard because it's like all you are is in a struggle. Absolutely. Like as an artist, it's like, Right, right. Because there's a season of the season of result. You know what I mean? And so that, that really man, these he's a big artist and listening, but it's all Absolutely. And music has is powerful, has a You know what I mean? And if all these artists are like, or just like some of the of the youth or whatever, like, and murder and all this nonsense artists are promoting the same Eventually, like that mindset And then eventually, once something's normalized, it becomes accepted. And then that kind of translates This is why we talk about, but Like we're promoting godly living and holiness and pursuing God. And that's what we're promoting. than that's the norm can be And that's the new normal. You know what I'm saying? So, um, but yeah, but to your point, what made me think about earlier, because I feel like I've seen it in the Christian rap space or whatever, where people that just because they're like saying Jesus, like they're almost like, there's like that entitlement, like you need to support this, you know what I mean? Yes. And, uh, you know, and I can say Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Everything else is out the Yeah. And that's always made me laugh. And it's just like, and I don't from that earlier on. It's just like been doing this. I was thinking earlier, like now and I still like, feel like asking you questions. I'm still trying to grow and, But, um, but yeah, I've, I've you know what I mean? Like you have to work on your You have to, you have to put in grow and get and get better. And I used to be that artist day, like we would just write a check it by nobody. It's just like we just wanted to just get the music out as soon as possible. And the song probably was just It's horrible. So now it's just like, I always send Shawn all my songs or whatever, and then he's just like, yeah, you should probably should fix this and he'll dissect it. And, but, but, but then, you know, and, but I appreciate that. I need that, like, because I best thing possible. No, it's funny because we've said this about worship music, it's just whiny. Yeah, a lot of worship songs. Yeah, yeah, all the time. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? I remember when Pastor Steve is One time. This is going back years. I don't even know. I don't I'm so bad at we're doing a song. The worship leader at that time was singing a song like I May Be Weak, Your Spirit, Spirit strong. It's so funny because he goes, I'm so weak. Yeah, I'm gonna be weak. I'm forever weak. You say, when are we ever gonna You know what I'm saying? So real facts. Facts. Wow. That's awesome. That's true. It's like we get and I'm like, like, our minds. You know what I mean? Like our minds is a powerful So it's like we replay negative But now it's just like now thoughts with a melody, like And music is so powerful because memorized facts and, um, and really take root. Yeah. Oh, absolutely. It does take root. And like the crazy part about it actually a worship song, I don't into the deep by Citipointe. Mhm. So I played that song for the Like Cathy had that song on repeat in like twenty twenty for like days. Okay. And I played it for the first And she broke down. It brought her right back to Yeah. And I was like, that's, that's look at what this this song did It caused her to get back to was in with the Lord. Right. You know, and and it just brought so much revelation out of that. I'm like, that alone is like so Music is timeless. Absolutely. That song that's ten years old You know, if if any Michael Jackson plays, your body's gonna start moving. It's just like, bro, it's right Absolutely. One thousand percent. You know, so it's like the, the way when it comes to creating music, we have to keep that in mind. Like this is going to transcend for, for years beyond this time, right now, this season, right now. How is this going to affect somebody else fifteen years from now when they come across this, you know? Right. So speaking of that, you're We got a CD in our hands. We got a CD. It's called A God Dream, right? Mhm. Um, talk to us about this album. Like what, what was your process and why did you call it a god dream? Um, so yeah, the, the heart started with the song. That's the last song on the Like I knew that like I wanted that was like the first song that I knew that I wanted to be on this album, because I wanted that to become the heart of the album. I think about my journey being twelve years, and it's just I like I get to do this, you know It's not so much just music. Music is just like a small aspect of it, you know what I mean? I think about like, to me, what foremost recognizing like that You know what I mean? Like I get to be a child of God work of the cross. I mean, I get to serve the I get to be a husband. I get to be a father. So all these things. So first, it's like it's a place of gratitude, you know what I mean? Like, I get to do this. Um, and then like I said, the to kind of use my gifts, you that's really the heart, you And then I go into like with a You know, God is a big God. So it's just like, you know, he He can do anything. So it's this idea still dare to Like God can do whatever. But like, for me, really, the God dream is just recognizing that I'm already living the God dream. You know what I mean? I've had times in my life where all right, God, I want you to do you to do all this. But it's just like God is doing So to me, I wanted that to be the heart, the album and get people to recognize like, just look around like, you know what I mean? Like, you're alive. You know what I mean? Like what we get to be a part of like what we're doing in this church and in this city is not normal. I mean, so it's just like, so yeah, so it's just a place of gratitude. And the album is very contrary to my name being just intention was never to just be Like I, my heart is Like, I want to work with So it's like twelve songs on Eight out of the twelve songs is with other people, you know what I mean? So and I'm hoping that this will to think too much ahead. I want to focus like I just God's doing right now. But I think that God has something in store that's going to be some of the voices on this project that we're going to do things in a bigger scale in the future. But but yeah, it's a, it's a God And I'm humbled that I even get, like I said, that I, that I'm here doing this with you guys that, you know, when I first came to this church, before I came to this church twelve years ago, I was, you know, part of a youth group. And I would, you know, rap, you would do a song or whatever. But then I thought that chapter Like when we made the transition that door is kind of closed. And, and, you know, I knew I still had like beyond music and that we would probably still do our thing. But then like a month in Pastor Tomoko like had I think you heard me do a song from flame tonight. You know the song Tonight by Um, at a youth camp or whatever. And then literally like after being here for a month, um, you invited me to do it on a Sunday morning, and that was just like a moment where I was just like, wow. Like, I felt like God was just done with you. You know what I mean? And then from there, just like opportunities that I've had within the church and being able to do this is the second album here. And I'm just super humbled and Like I think often I'm like, who am I? You know what I mean? Um, so yeah, I'm grateful. I'm excited. Yeah. Believing that God has big Do you have a favorite song Um, and don't give me the, uh. Oh, they're all my favorite You know what I mean? It's tough. I love them all. Yeah, they're all my babies. Man. I'm gonna say we get to do this. Like I said, that was like the You know what I mean? That was just like, really? I feel like embodies the whole It's with me, Jordan and But I have a song called In You. Um, that's with me and my wife that I feel like is a really special song. Can't wait for people to hear And then Joy in the morning. So it was a top three. Top three. Your wife Erica, not Badu. Erica. Yeah. Okay. Hey, I'm gonna one up you, man. I'm gonna drop an album on a Oh, no. No one can play it. Yeah. Vintage. It's really crucial. Yeah. We're gonna wait back. Yeah. Right. Right. I'm just so glad I got an old car where I can, like, still play this. Dude, I wish I could play the I got the harp and sword. I got into the car. I was leasing a newer RV or Ready to play. I'm like, weird. Like, do I put like I, I like mad long. I'm like, where's this? Where do I put the CD in? And I couldn't even, I felt the same way when I got this, I was like, man, I gotta go take my daughter's car for, for a For a ride just to listen to this, you know? Love the city days, though. Yeah. Yeah. What are you working on these Um. Right now, um, my studio's been out for the count for the past three months, so I haven't been able to, like, fully lock in. Um, but that's going to change right back in. But I've been writing, you know, down just writing and just, uh, been revealing to me. Um, there's been a lot of identity things and, and just all sorts of different things that God has been unfolding as I've been spending time with him and I'm excited to like, put that on paper and actually, you know, uh, create something with it. So my goal is to, at some point this, this year release an album.
