I'm like, yeah, yeah, let's go, So, you know Pastor Marco de episode might just be for us. I don't know. That's okay. That's okay, That's okay. I was thinking about that. I'm like, how many people are in our community is gonna be geeking out over talking about the Odyssey. So this is selfishly. Yeah, selfish, selfish, selfish. It's like we took the youth to Pastor Lindsay was like, you Exactly, exactly. Oh, man. I don't miss those days as a I remember one time we went to Six Flags for like hours because Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're talking about the Um, so the Odyssey is a movie that just was just released by Christopher Nolan. But before we get into that, Nolan movie besides this one? Can I just say favorite movies Yeah, movies. Movies just in general. Just in general. It's got to be Gladiator. Okay. Braveheart. Interstellar. Christopher. Nolan. Interstellar. Yeah. interstellar. But Odyssey is up there. Yeah, yeah. Odyssey is up there. Yeah. I think the Odyssey is going to to really, like, sink in, how Christopher Nolan, he he's, he's Yeah. From, from a film making standpoint that not just the, the, the angles, but the dialogue. And yeah, it's just he's almost rewriting the film industry because his gift is so great, right? Like the way he, the way he transformed Batman, right? Yeah. One of the greatest movies, the way he did that, the Dark Knight, right? Oh, man. Phenomenal. And it makes you think like, inside of that man. And the gift that he can actually articulate what he's thinking, dreaming. Then put it onto screen and Amazing. Yeah. Amazing. It's funny you say that because I was thinking about, you know, the scene at the end, not Spoiler alert. Yeah, but when I did see his Christopher Nolan when it comes is his bow. He doesn't have a smartphone. Yeah, he's not on technology. He's not into CGI and all the He sits with a pad of paper, and thoughts on paper. Even when it comes to delivering delivers it in an envelope And it's like among his peers, the art form and he takes his Yeah. You mentioned the dark, the Dark Just being able to take a comic character and make you feel believable. Right, right, right. Because the way that he developed his characters, like he makes you have to wrestle with yourself. Right, right. You know what I mean? When you're thinking about these characters like the Joker man, like the Joker, the Joker to me was such a commentary on our society, right? In general. But then there's the prestige. I don't know if you guys ever movie is incredible. That whole like the pursuit of What are you willing to Yeah yeah yeah. For that. And then the ending of The I'm not gonna spoil it. Inception's crazy exceptions. Crazy. Yeah. Makes you think. Yeah. Yeah. Again, for me, his movies is a Yeah. Yeah. You know, I mean, his movies, if talk to someone, I'm like, look, to have eyes to see. Yeah. Right. To be able to appreciate what Absolutely. And to me, that's what a great It takes you on a journey and it makes you wrestle with everything. Oh, yeah. Especially you. You, the protagonist of your And the antagonist. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Hero and villain at the same Crazy. Usually you're the villain. Yeah, yeah. That's when, you know, the movie There was. There was intention behind the When you can see yourself in start wrestling with like, yo, Yeah, you see yourself and you start feeling like, man, this is it's heavy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's like reading the Bible, I think the more I read the being the villain. Mhm. Right. I don't know how you guys read Testament, the more I'm like, Yeah, yeah. I'm not Jesus. Yeah. Right. You know I'm not the hero. Yeah. Right. And it's what I love about this Again, we're gonna get into it, unpack it, the more you realize. Wait a minute. I see myself in this character. Mhm. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. So before we get into like, what are your first thoughts? Like, what were your first First time viewing walking out Yeah. So I'll go, let me get my movie Um, so I went deep dive after Odyssey and I watched memento insomnia because those were the only ones I didn't watch from Christopher Nolan. Yeah, that one was wild. I had to really sit there and be It felt like a fright wreck the I'm like, what is going on? But my favorite movie of his only because the Joker stands Dark Knight, the Dark Knight, Bane did his thing though. Yeah, yeah, he did, he did. Um, but from watching this movie all the way through the cinematography for me, I was just telling you guys before we recorded, I was like, when I watch a movie or listen to music, I listen to the production. I saw the movie, I just I watch it just like as a, an everyday goer. So like seeing how it was shot, It never felt rushed, like the whole time for three hours I drink larges when I go to the theaters. And so I drank a large seltzer I was me by myself. I went in, bro, I go in and so use the restroom. Halfway through, I'm like, no, I can't leave this. People are getting up and I'm like, what are y'all doing? What are y'all doing? But I think the pacing of the me, because that means that like they said, he shot over to come and bring it down. Is he thirty or one hundred? That's a big gap bringing down That's insane, man. And the Odyssey, that story, to show it in a way that's much that he left out, but it Right, right, right, right. And he brought in elements of wasn't in the Odyssey. That's the other thing, right? To me, he did a great job of other stories in because usually in the Odyssey that's free, you But being able to like what he likes to take you past, present at once, man. I'm amazing. You know, I walked out of that that was a masterpiece. Mainly because what we physically saw on screen, the camera angles, not even just the dialogue, but when they were having conversations and even the angle of the camera during the dialogue. Yeah, yeah, it was, I was blown And I'm like, man, this is his gifting and his craft, and created to do. Yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? Because you walk out of there Yeah, yeah. Now you're going home. Now you're thinking about it. I'm in the middle of the night crazy in the morning. That scene was crazy. Crazy. So now now you're like, it's You said sermon, right? I'm in that day. I'm like, yo, this is like a decade worth of sermons in this movie. Yeah. You can pick apart lines and And I'm just like, amazing. Yeah. Amazing. So we want to start with some Let's do it, bro. Yeah. All right. The cost of the sacrifice is in And that comes from Odysseus Agamemnon sacrificing his winds to get to Troy swiftly. But as ironic, he gets there Yeah. You know, so what comes to mind The cost of the sacrifice is in I think, first of all, we should worldview of the gods, right, is And I think a lot of people don't even realize that the New Testament is rooted in that worldview, right? Especially when Paul starts this is this is the worldview People would have these gods. And then people were looking for Right. And I couldn't help but to think that the the difference in the story of the Bible is the fact that we have a God that does the sacrifice. Right? You know what I mean? Right. Like this is the difference of worldview of thinking like, now because that's what we do. Yeah, right. To get favor with the gods. And this God says, no, I'm not I'm not like these other gods, I will do the sacrifice. So to me, that was powerful, Like the willingness to find favor, right? And our God says, I'll sacrifice Yeah. For your favor. Mhm. You know. Yeah. Which plants the seed in his demise years later, right? Yeah. Mhm. Heavy man. Mhm. And you think about it. What is sacrifice? It's giving up something that And we all sacrifice. We all serve, we all worship. And when I think about men, it's It's. What are you sacrificing to and You know, we can put so much Like your grass. Yeah. It matters. Yeah, but that's not the thing, You know, your garage or all your different things that you're giving that you're sacrificing for fantasy football or your softball league or even your job. It's like the outward you could And then the things that actually matter your marriage, your family, your faith can be degrading. Why? Because you're putting so much And, um, I don't want to get thing, but they end up becoming They end up being the enemy. Right, right. Yeah. And, and, and with that was exposed so well through the took the story, it was that, they went to war because of But the reality is he wants the trade routes, right? Like he wants to take over. Right. You know what I mean? The the economy basically. Right. Which which again, man, you can't help but to make the connection with us right now, right? Right in oil, right. Like we're sacrificing in the they tell us the war really for. But it's really like, what is it Right? You know what I mean? So again, like we can really that's what I'm saying. Like it's so relevant, right? To where we are right now into say, like as fathers, right? The, the line usually is, I'm Right, right, right, right, But it's like, are you really Right? Yeah. It reminds me of another great When he finally says to his Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because this whole time he's like, I'm doing this for this family. Yeah. Right. And then realizing, oh, I'm actually the villain of this family. Yeah, yeah. Because the whole time I'm actually having fun doing this, right? You get to that place. I don't know if you guys are watching one of the greatest series of all time, Breaking Bad, right? When he's like, finally he owns Like, no, it was I was getting a what I mean? But we say, no, I'm doing this Yeah, right, right, right. Or it's that line. Don't let what you bring home be more important than you actually being home. Yeah, yeah. I think that's what society is Because we're, we're on this, this, this freight train towards success, right? In the name of caring for my family, you know, elevating our family. But are you really, though all spending outside the four walls By the time you think you got to the place where you been trying to get to, you have adult children. Yeah, right, right, right. You missed it, right? Like we missed it. You know, daddy, you were always Mhm. Now, now you have no control because you weren't present. Right, right, right. Was it worth the sacrifice? Yeah. I hear I hear Jesus saying, what The point of winning the whole your soul in the process. Yeah, yeah. You know, and that to me, that's The dude comes home who kills Wife. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because she resented this. Right, right, right, right, man. Crazy heavy. But can we talk about like, he only had like three to four minutes of screen time and every single scene, it was like it felt like moments like Darth Vader. Yeah. Right, right, right. All right. Agamemnon. When the gates of Troy opened That was a fine shot. Oh, it's fire! Fire, fire, fire. What the kids call it. Or harvesting or farming or Agamemnon and his sacrifice. Well, I think the sacrifice. Well, yeah, I'll say that, but You just sidetracked me because costume design tier, top tier, is this is serious. Yeah, that just hit me. Every scene has him in his Naked? Yeah, yeah. Unarmored. Crazy. Crazy. And and, and I love the the shot they are like the dude never never see his face. And you're like, mesmerized by Yeah. What does he look like? Which is like, man, this guy's He looks like a giant. But then but then how small is Right? When they show him from behind, Yeah. That got propped up. Yeah. In his, you know, quote unquote Yeah. Right, right. Another thing that I could talk Yeah. Right. Saul's armor versus yeah, Yeah. Right, right. There's so much there to unpack, the smallness of the man in that by his own wife. Yeah. To say, man, this was your That makes me think of like The Bible says that he was head and shoulders above everyone else. Yes. And head and shoulders. Think about that. It's pride. Right? Right. And what is one of the idols of It's intellect, it's And it's just like, wow, love that actually builds up. It builds humility. That's actually a line from the view of a man is from below. It's humility. Yeah. So good man. Next one. If remembering destroys your Oh, this is Odysseus. After seven years, he's just the trauma of losing all his hell on earth. And he's on this island with this goddess who is lulling him to sleep and causing him to forget everything he's been through and everything he's going to. And when he's asking her, why She says, if you remember, you And he says this line, if happiness, then it wasn't real. And for me, that's talking about Yeah. And the Holy Spirit empowers you through certain things. What comes to mind when you hear Well, we got to talk about the where we are today as a society. We try to numb the mind. Right? Right. Right. And he's addicted to the lotus. Lotus, right? He's basically addicted to it Right? To what? To forget. But he's troubled at the same time because he needs to remember. Right. And I think we live in a society where we don't want to sit with the pain. We want to numb the pain, right? And we want to escape. Yeah. Right. But the reality is, as human We have to face it. We have to embrace it. We have to. It's almost like it's better to the pain, to get somewhere than Mhm. To me, that that speaks volume We are so addicted. We're addicted to everything. Right? Right. It's not just drugs, right? It's not just pills. We're addicted to entertainment. Yeah. Yeah. Like, that's why some of these. This movie might feel boring to We're just looking to be Yeah. But I want to wrestle with Right. You know what I mean? So to me, man, we gotta talk. Stop, stop and think about that. Like he could have just lived That's what she wanted, right? It's like, I want you to be Yeah. He would have lived forever. He would live forever. Yeah. Right, right. And it's like, man, is that what Living in a state of numbness Or are we supposed to embrace the pain that actually brings purpose and meaning to our lives? Yeah. You know? Right. Oh, man. That's the place where I think we as human beings, we always try to avoid pain and discomfort. But that's the very thing that forward, revealing and exposing Right? But because we have so much, we escape, I'll say. Yep. And this phone that we all have table is our lotus flower. Yeah. When, when, when life is hitting We scroll. Yeah. We scroll, we scroll. We keep eating that lotus and we And that's, That's the downfall Yeah. Is is checking out. Yeah. We want to be checked out. We don't want to be checked in We want to check out of the We don't want to go through it. We don't want to feel any, any We want to just escape from the or what this process may be And it's, it's a challenge to, all, we're all fathers, right? So now we're seeing our own seeing the battle that's ahead Yeah, right. You know what I mean? Like we have to be be very intentional with, with sharing these, these, these, these life giving truths and principles about the power of the word of God and making sure you're sitting with things and not escaping things. Yeah. Right. Yeah. It's that false sense of peace We're talking about this Jesus embraces his cross, right? And our flesh craves comfort, Right, right. It craves that sense of just much more for you. Yeah. Which is another great moment in Because the question throughout the movie is how do the gods speak? Right. And they're like, why can't the God speak in a way that we can hear it? And one of the lines from the girl that was playing Athena was, who doesn't understand pain? Yeah. Right. And it brought me to C.S. Lewis's famous, you know, quote Yeah. Right. He uses this to. To what? To rouse a deaf world. We're so numb to everything that pain needs to be part of our process. We hate it, but we need it. Right? Yeah. Right. It's. And you can't watch this movie pain throughout the whole thing. But but is it a pain that's there a redemptive side of pain? Right. Right. Because at the heart of our The cross. Right. Right. A painful thing brings about the Right. But you can't go around it. Right, right, right. You got to go through the cross, right, to have a resurrection, right? Right. And I think again, that to me, because I think we think we want Because he could have stayed Right? Right, right. But there's something in us that that says, no, this is not it. Right, right. You need to embrace this thing. You got to face this thing. Yeah. In order to go home, you know, Yeah. There's so many meanings there. Right home. You know what I mean? Yeah. You know, I heard this recently. It says your flesh doesn't care not going there. Yeah. Wow. And your flesh craves that Yeah. And that's why Jesus says we But can we deny ourselves? That's killing the flesh. That's picking up the cross. That's saying no to whatever Like, no, I'm not going to stay in my comfort and numb and forget. And because that's not truth, Jesus calls, you know, let's own And that's how he ends up Yeah. It's Is surrendering to the You want control so bad, But it's when you surrender to It's when you surrender to the You surrender to God that he supposed to be. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. What I was going to say is like the reason why he was tormented and numbing. Because he kept taking control. And it wasn't until he released control that he actually took control of the right narrative, that he was able to get to a place of safe to get home safely and actually get that victory that he was searching for, which is wild. Yeah. Like that surrender. That's when you actually find right area of surrender. What about that scene where, um, guys are cooking the cattle, like in a hole. I can see you. Yeah, but that's what we do, But what did he say? That's a powerful thing. They say they're like he said, You think the guys wouldn't Notice he's like, no, we we Oh, what a lie. Crazy, right? We'd rather drown than starve. Yes. Meaning I'd rather God have his Instant gratification. Yeah, right. Instant gratification. But that's us. We literally feast on the flesh. The things of this world in God sees it all. Yeah, absolutely. But going back to what you just brought up, it's so powerful because again, here's the theme of like, he wants to go home, but he's trying to do it in his own strength. Mhm. It wasn't until he surrendered, Yeah. Without even realizing. Just laid on the raft. He just laid there. It's just crazy because that's It's just it's the hardest thing But it's the thing that actually gets you where you need to go, right? You know, so that's what I saw a lot of like, he was trying to control everything. And you see that start to happen when they're leaving and his men say, hey, let's follow Agamemnon. He's like, I followed him long Yeah, yeah, I want to go my own You know what I mean? How many times do we say, ah, in my favor? Like I thought, I'm going to do Yeah, I'm going to take the I'm going to grab the wheel life alone again, because I for me than you make for me. It's so good. And those around me. Yeah. He actually said that we'll get Yeah. Yeah. Crazy. Oh, man. Shortcuts. Oh, no. Think about this. Right. Because in our church, we see a older in life. Yeah. And a common thing that I've too, is just. I wish I had this sooner, which is true, but maybe the younger you wasn't ready to submit and surrender, right? Because I think about what if he All those suitors in his house, He would have died. Oh, yeah, he would have died. And there are some things he. We don't know how. We don't know why God works all Where it took that extra time to you to be able to come home and you're supposed to. Had he gotten there with Agamemnon, it would have been a hot mess. Absolutely. Yeah. You would have went through the Let's talk about that. Yeah, let's talk about that. So the last time we see Agamemnon, he talks about his downfall. And that's the first time we see Yeah. And he says, when you go home, front door and get praises and Assess. Take your time. And that's exactly what he does. That's humility. And as a man, it's just like, family, the things that God is AM I taking my time? AM I not? AM I rushing decisions? AM I being prudent? AM I being wise? AM I assessing? So what comes to mind when you There's there's so much there, Um, first of all, it's that Absolutely. Right. That's, that's the first thing because he's going home with that mindset. I'm I'm the man. Yeah, yeah. Right. But he never stopped. Again, this whole movie is about are you wrestling and are you self-aware? Right. Right. There was no self-awareness, He just thought, I'm the king. I'm the man. I'm right back to when I left. Yeah, exactly. I'm coming home. I'm gonna do what I always do. Now I have Troy. Yeah, I have more. Yeah. Right right, right. And lost everything because aware that that sacrifice would Yeah, yeah. And you lost the greatest Absolutely. Your wife's loyalty was gone. Yeah. Yeah, right. And you're supposed to rule your Your queen. Right? Mhm. And who did Satan talk to, Eve? Yeah. Planted that seed. Mhm. On Eve. And then the whole garden was Right, right. The whole basically the kingdom. Right, right. Was gone because you're over Right. And the enemy takes advantage and says, hey, what's up with this? Right, right, right. And so the poison begins with And again, I'm not putting down I'm saying is, is because he was the right way. Right, right, right. Comes back to a wife that's absolutely, literally gain the Absolutely, absolutely. I would say don't come in like a Come in like a servant, right? It's the motto of Jesus. Like everyone wanted him to come lowly child, a servant of all. It's the same is true. And I find it funny too, at the Who are the only two people that and then the lady who was So it's like a powerful picture Being a servant or lowly versus oh so good looking right now. What about the scene where his you're my father? And he says, nah, I'm just a Yeah. Crazy Lord himself, literally humility and as a servant. Yeah. Wow. It's crazy because I was I was I mean, I was wrestling, no, I about loyalty and disloyalty We saw that. You know what I mean? Who was loyal? Who wasn't? Agamemnon. Agamemnon came home and his. His wife was disloyal. Mhm. We we see, you know, all the But then the disloyal men. Right. And in the scene where they're And one thing stuck out to me, I probably going to miss this. And it popped out to me because The loyalty of his dog. Mhm. He stayed. He waited. Now, he was gone for years. For years. But he still stayed loyal to his And to prove that that he was He waited till he got home to Mhm. You know what I mean. When this dog was kicked around, It was just he was like, I'm I'm going to wait. I'm going to remain loyal. Mhm. Remain loyal to my master. I mean, it was a powerful scene because that's when his son would recognize that you are my dad. Yeah. No other animal would do that. Yeah. You're my dad, right? You know what I mean? And it's like, are we how loyal are we to what God has called us to do? How loyal are we to the king? Right? Yeah. Because we saw that that tension home and they were trying to Right. They were trying to fight for And how often does that happen? I mean, in the world, but also How many times do we see people and are not loyal? Right. What what is your motive? What is your M.O.? Why? Why do you want to be close to Yeah, yeah. What's the reasoning? Right. Right. So we're seeing we're seeing All I kept thinking about was tension that we were sitting in just charring through like, man, Yeah. What's the name of the speaking What's his name? I forget his name. Blind. Played by John Leguizamo. John Leguizamo. Right. But speaking of loyalty, here's a man who's keeping your legacy alive, right? Right. By telling your son the story You know what I mean? It's like the power of who you Right. And he's basically mentoring his Yeah. Right. And staying again. Loyal. Right. To him that whole time. And that's it's a beautiful Like, do we have people like matter what it looks like? Or were you in this just for You know what I mean? Because as we know that these for them, like. Yeah. Waiting for the opportunity. Right. Right. You know what I mean? To take what's his position? Get in position. And it's true. It happened. Listen, it happened with the like, hey, who's the greatest? And I love how Odysseus tested He was like, oh, I served him in He was a hard taskmaster. And he said, no, but he's fair And that's when Odysseus was He was just like, like a son. Again, the prudence, the Right, right. It's like, where in my life am I And you got to give people time. It's like the quote, um, the promote somebody too quickly. Yeah. Give them time. Let their character as a servant And that's exactly what Odysseus Yeah, yeah. Yep. Yeah. Well, shout out to the wife too, Yeah, yeah. Vengeance or peace. I want Odysseus ride or die, Penelope, shout out to the ride I don't know if you remember Yeah, but, um, the villain, he said to the loyal servant, he was like, does she even know your name? And he couldn't answer. But then when she gives him the bow, she says his name and he lights up. Oh man, where he was still Even if you don't know who I am, Well, I didn't catch that. That's good. That's awesome. Man. Penelope. Well, I'm gonna double down and give a shout out to my wife right here. Same. Same same. My wife's loyal. Oh, man. Better fight. Okay, so going back to when they get stranded on the island with Apollo's cattle. Odysseus said the breeze that impossible to leave the breeze That's that. Sin makes you so easy to come What comes to mind when you Well, that's how you get lured That's what you get lured in. And eventually, um, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. And that's what happens in that Because they're like, we won't. Yeah. Yeah. Well we won't enough time. Yeah. We all say that. Right. And willpower can only take you Did for a little bit. Can only take you so far. And so to me that that is the You know what I mean? It comes in subtly, you know, and it lures you slowly but surely. It's like, uh, James talks about That slowly begins to now form and become something else, and eventually it becomes death, right? And the wages of sin is death is Which for them, it wasn't just emotional death or spiritual death. It was literally physical. Because after that, that was it. It was over. It was over for them. And how many people have been in that place without realizing that they were in that place again? The lack of self-awareness that Samson. Samson didn't know the spear Man, that's one of the scariest You know? Yeah. That's how sin is, though, It's so easy to get to. But once you're in it and it has Mhm. They couldn't get off that Right. Because of that that pushback. And we think that we are strong Yeah. Oh, I can just dabble. Let me get to the edge of the I'll be all right with you, Right? If that. That one little gust of wind Mhm. And now you're stuck. Now you're. Now you're in change. Now you're in bondage. And now you're fighting to get But you're stuck. Mhm. It's. Yeah. Yeah. I think of like, because we deal Like, um, the wind of relationships, like the wind seems easy. This relationship seems easy. We hang out together, we're fasting together, we're praying together, doing all these intimate things together, not knowing that you can be doing the Christian things but lead you right into the sinful things. Oh, yeah. And then that wind and that consequence will keep you locked in to this place and trying to get out. It's only when did it happen Do you remember? It was right after. Um. Wait to get on the island. Yeah, to get off the island sin and then eaten. Yeah. Yeah, Which brought them out to Got it. So as soon as they committed the So that's when, when Odysseus Right? Yeah. That's when the wind stopped. And it's that moment, like you you recognize and you bring then that wind can stop. I don't know if that makes you can get out. Oh, because you want to feel Why are you chasing the bag? Yeah, because you think you're gonna find it in the material things? No. That can only be found in That's the true desire of your Yeah. What does Jesus say to carry You're tying yourself to the anchor that'll keep you away. Because we're going to hear all All these things want all this influence, all certain things I want. Seeing the reality of that. And then I have a friend of mine couldn't be in public because of that he's been through. And he's like, I it's been years like myself again. Yeah. And I'm like, man, how many Because you're just like, it's Right, right. A soldier is not thinking about So you think about the What does that mean? I was saying let me tell you about the Trojan horse from inside. From the inside. People drowning, hunger, on each other. It's like you guys are singing This was literally hell for us. Like what goes on or what when they're exposed to such Not just what they physically do they do themselves? Mhm. The guilt now that they carry. Right. You know, and going back to success, I learned this from John Maxwell. He says, success for me is the most thankful for me. And it goes back to like, what No one else can be my wife's No one else can raise my kids. No one else can take care of my No one else can live my life by I gotta own that, that success.
